The Gumgali track is a culturally significant ridge-line connecting the inland valleys to the ocean at Coffs Harbour, which forms a crescent defined by green, white and blue. This is the only location in New South Wales where the Great Dividing Range meets the Pacific Ocean.
Twenty self-sufficient cabins centred around a communal space for yarning and community engagement. Inspired by the local traditional Gumbaynggirr stories while responding to the sites’ topography, the building aims to prioritise landscape spaces which in turn will provide opportunities to impart knowledge in a traditional way. The design of the cabins were intended as a microcosm of the overall site treatment. A simple timber clad space with bed, study and kitchenette, all wrapped by a protective timber batten screen verandah containing the outside bathroom on one side and creating an opening to the expansive view. The timber battens angle in different ways to preserve privacy and open to the view and breezes.
